Tuesday, July 23, 1946. Last of the POWs sent home.

The United States released the last of 375,000 German POWs it had held in the United States, embarking 1,385 of them on the General Yates after transporting them from Camp Shanks, New York.

About ten POWs who had escaped during the war remained at large and were never accounted for.

The Zaibatsu, the Japanese corporations that had financed Japan's war effort, were abolished.

Many of them would be reconstituted starting in 1953, including Mitsubishi, Mitsui and Sumitomo.

Frances Ramsden and her standard poodles were on the cover of Look.

Ramsden was a model who had a very brief acting career, appearing in only three films. She later married Egyptian millionaire Adel Sabit, a cousin of King Farouk, but had to abandon Cairo due to that association. She divorced in 1975 and returned to California, where she spent the remainder of her life, passing away in 2000 at the age of 80.

The prior day's bombing of the King David Hotel made the front page of American newspapers.

It's interesting that the press referred to the Irgun as "terrorists".  The label is appropriate in varying degrees, but the attack on the King David Hotel might have been a legitimate attack, in the context of a legitimate war, if this war is regarded as that.  Terrorism itself is never justified.

The original goal of the mission was to destroy materials that identified those who had participated in the destruction of bridges a bit earlier in the uprising.

Of course, the ultimate question is whether the uprising itself was justified.  I don't feel that it was.  It's certainly the case that the failure to accommodate both the Arab and Jewish populations has resulted in 80 years of strife, although such an accommodation may not have been possible.

United Airlines addressed its customers.

United is in the news again today, looking for a solution for its customers who do not wish to fly into Insurrectionist Seditionist Narcissist International Airport in Palm Beach.

An interesting surplus item.

Tuesday, June 25, 1946. The World Bank commences operations.

The World Bank commenced operations.

Nationalist Chinese troops killed ten demonstrating middle school students at Xuzhou when their commander, Feng Yu-xiang Fang Jingxing ordered them to be fired on by machine guns.

The US was struggling through a post war meat shortage.  Denver newspapers were reporting that the Office of Price Administration was accordingly being kept in operation and that Denver butcher shops were nearly bare.

The YB-35 flew for the first time.

Long considered a real oddball, the aircraft anticipated the B-2.

Thursday, May 30, 1946. First post war Indianapolis 500.

The Indianapolis 500 was run for the first time since 1941.  George Robson, took the race.

Robson was killed in a racing accident that September.

Over 90 passengers were killed in a railway accident at Hengyang, China.

The day prior the Senate had defeated a really badly thought out plan by Truman to draft striking rail workers.

Air travel was expanding.

The Strategic Air Command and the Tactical Air Command were created.

Shoulder patch of the United States Army Air Forces Strategic Air Command.

SAC therefore predates the Air Force as an independent branch of the military.

And so does TAC, which has been inactive since 1992, when it was merged into SAC.

I've been meaning to do a post on reorganization of the U.S. military, which the illegal war on Venezuela and King Donny's War shows to be a desperate need, but I haven't gotten around to it..

Wednesday, March 20, 1946. Tule Lake closes but its residents struggles continue.

The final adjudication of the cases of Japanese internees who had renounced their citizenship during World War Two concluded, resulting in the closure of Tule Lake War Relocation Center.  The litigation reversed their loss of citizenship, but the Justice Department would reverse that.  It would take until the 1960s for their citizenship to be restored.

Almost all of those who had renounced their citizenship had recanted, and for that matter not all of the renunciations were genuine.

There were two air disasters in the news:

United Airlines Flight 14, flying from Boise to Denver, crashed into Elk Mountain, Wyoming, killing all 21 persons on board.

The plane is apparently the last one to have crashed into Elk Mountain, and was also apparently the fifth to do so.
